Sunflower Bean on this weeks show!

Anyone who works in the music industry will explain that it’s a strange place to work, you often deal with colleagues over email and social networks more than dealing with people face to face, such is the nature of freelancing and busy schedules. Your local scene and city becomes your support hub and those faces that you regularly bump into are integral to making you feel that you’re involved,  keeping you abreast of new artists and news from their perspective, it helps you help them and it’s always great to feel the excitement and experience of being in the thick of it and the buzz of watching artists and bands grow and their success spread outside the local scene.

Anyone that knows the north west knows that Warrington is a strange one for the music scene, Liverpool and Manchester have traditionally been the places where bands are heard and musicians from Warrington almost have to step out of their home zone to get shows and to progress. I’ve supported a number of bands from the region over the last few years, Temple Songs, Antelopes, Man & The Echo, The Foetals and Viola Beach. The latter were the latest discovery, i met them when they were selling merch at the Hidden Charms show at the Eagle Inn in Salford through their manager Craig Tarry, so fun and carefree and having so much fun. I interviewed them just six weeks ago at a practice space in Warrington where i earwigged outside the door as they sounded incredible, I’d met Craig whilst arranging an interview with Hidden Charms at Fallow Cafe around 18 months ago and he was a truly great guy, passionate about music, in love with his bands and he would have walked to the ends of the earth to make things happen for them. The last time i saw Craig was at the Viola Beach and Hidden Charms show three months ago, and the last time we spoke was on my birthday earlier this month where he told me of his excitement at how well his bands were doing, he gave me tips on managing bands and told me he’d get me a beer the next time we hung out at a show.

I can’t even start to explain the loss the music industry has experienced this week, my heart is breaking, these guys had ‘it’, they would have achieved commercial success, their future was so bright and i just want to offer my heartfelt sorrow and condolences to their close friends and family. I’m trying to take comfort from the fact they were doing what they loved and they were together when this tragedy occurred. In the hours before the left us they had a ‘crimp off’ with Model Aeroplanes, danced in the mosh pit to Pale Honey’s set, fun through and through. Rest in peace guys, you’ll be missed xx
